Aylus Great Neck Branch Volunteer in Bayard Cutting Arboretum on 7/11/2026 (78th)

On 7/11/2026, Aylus volunteers went to Bayard Cutting Arboretum from 9:30am to 12:00am (2.5 hours).

Today we’re back at the farm in Bayard Cutting Arboretum. It’s almost an annual activity when volunteers either help to plant the crops or harvest them. Our job this morning is to harvest garlic.

First, the leaves of the garlic were cut off using sickles or cutters. Then, volunteers needed to pull the garlic out without stepping on the beds. The soil on the garlic was shaken off gently, or else it would damage the garlic’s peel. All the pulled-out garlic was eventually sent to a greenhouse to be cured. That is, to get rid of the water in the garlic, which makes it easier to peel off its skin. One extra tip that the volunteers needed to be mindful of is to separate different types of garlic——some are saved as seeds for next year while others are going to be given out to members.

After that, volunteers pulled out weeds in the beds and collected them into buckets. Volunteers recovered the ground with wood chips that were originally there to prevent more weeds from growing.

Members who participated include:
Felicia Liu (2.5h),
Yingxiang Liu (2.5h),
Yuya Liu (2.5h),
Isabelle Yang (2.5h),
