On Thursday, February 19th, 2026, from 9 am to 11:30 am, Maureen Regan hosted an award ceremony at Queens College to celebrate the volunteers’ hard work for our 214th event.
Before the Awaed Ceremony started, members of AYLUS Oakland Gardens helped with some of the ceremony preparations. Some members helped with setting up more chairs in the room where the ceremony was being held. Others helped set up goody bags that were handed out later in the event. With the members’ help, the event started smoothly.
At the start of the event, Maureen gave a speech about why she wanted to host this award ceremony. Maureen Regan is a community advocate, fostering youth education for environmental justice, health and Wellness, climate change with a focus on a sustainable urban space. She sits on many local boards, VP of Operations at Queens Historical Society, Co Chair of Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground Consetvancy, President of Queensboro Hill Flushing Civic, Voelker Orth Museum and on the CAB of NY Presbyterian Hosp Queens and Queens College. She created Green Earth Urban Gardens in 2011 to address local green spaces and food justice in the community. She also is a board member of Community Board 7, which serves all of Northeast Queens.She hosted this ceremony to thank the AYLUS Oakland Garden members for their two years of collaboration with the Green Earth Urban Gardeners. This ceremony was to show appreciation to the volunteers and congratulate them for their hard work and teamwork over the past 2 years of working with her. She also plans to expand the the volunteer event beyond flushing urban spaces and plans have more event near bayside.
After the speech, there was a concert where some volunteers showed off their musical talent. There was Iokting Lin, who played flute; Vicki Lin, who played the trumpet; Sohpia You, who played the flute; Ricky Song, who played the Violin and Guitar; Stephanie You, who played the flute; and Zhengylian Fang, who also played the flute. This concert helped liven the ceremony and showcased some members’ hobbies outside of volunteer work.
Lastly, we want to thank Mareen and the other hosts, like Minnie Schaefer and Mable Law, for the food that they offered and the ceremony they hosted. Thank you, Mareen, for your continued work in improving the green urban space in Flushing, and we look forward to working with you in the future.
