On Saturday, January 24, from 1:00 to 4:00 AYLUS Roslyn volunteered at CP Nassau’s residents home.
We began by baking cookies for the residents and let them partake in the process; all volunteers enjoyed participating. The residents helped mix and handle the ingredients with supervision and assistance.
Once the cookies were finished, we set them on the countertop as we began our first activity: jigsaw puzzles. Each resident was assigned a member to assist them in the activity. One of the residents was so happy when the puzzle was finished that she took a picture of the finished piece. When the cookies were done cooling, we helped ourselves to some and shared them with the residents.
After that, we began making a DIY Chinese paper dragon using the materials given to us. When we were finished, we were judged by how accurate they were, and set them aside for now. Next, we played bingo with the residents, and each of them was assigned to a volunteer. Due to their love for bingo, everyone had a wonderful time playing.
Multiple rounds of bingo later, some of the participants had to leave earlier than expected, but it was negligible. We carried on playing with the residents, doing more fun activities like bingo, which helped with the residents’ interaction skills and engagement.
In short, the volunteers were wonderful, and they were eager to spend time with the residents. The activities were unique and creative and allowed the residents to participate. We hope to have more opportunities to return soon!
