On January 11th, 2026, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI) from 1:30-5:00 pm. Today, we returned from our long winter break, and our role as volunteers was to help and lighten the teachers’ workload.
As teacher assistants, we ease the teacher’s responsibilities while creating an engaging, fun, and learning environment for the children. To begin the class, we greet the teacher and the students who walk into the classroom with smiles on our faces, and we help the students unpack to get the learning materials they need to learn and stay engaged in the lesson. Beginning the class this way can help ensure a positive tone and a comfortable mood, helping students feel ready to learn. Throughout the lessons, we assisted with various class needs, including escorting students to the bathroom, distributing classwork sheets, monitoring the classroom, printing extra copies, answering students’ questions about classwork or homework, and more. Additionally, we support students who need help with classwork to ensure no one falls behind in the lesson. By doing this, the teacher can be fully focused on teaching, knowing that every student in the class has a helping hand.
At the end of class, we help students pack their belongings, say goodbye, and leave a positive impression so both guardians and students know this school has an enjoyable, comforting community they can look forward to. Even though these tasks may seem easy to handle, they still allowed teachers to be less stressed about minor matters, focus on the education they need to provide to students, and feel less stressed, especially since it’s the first day after winter break. This is our main duty as TAs to help around the school, and give everyone a helping hand.
Overall, having the duties as a TA, gave us an insight on what difficulties teachers face in the classroom and helped us develop patience, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the effort required to create a meaningful learning experience. We, as TAS, also gained a rewarding experience to support young learners and do what we can to help them.
