On Tuesday, December 23rd, from 9 am to 1 pm, volunteers from the AYLUS Roslyn Branch helped out at the NOSH Delivers! food pantry. NOSH Delivers! goal is to provide food to people in need in their local community. They deliver bags of groceries weekly to families who cannot come in person to the food pantry.
In the morning when we first arrived, we started off with packing bags for NOSH’s KFIP(Kid’s Food Independence Program). This food aims to provide food for kids when it isn’t provided to them by the schools when they are at home. It allows children to have independence of their own food. The bags were decorated by students around Long Island and were especially designed for the holiday season. Students are home from school during the holidays for an extended period of time, which means their families will have to provide them with food. The KFIP bags help take some of the responsibility of off the parents. We filled the bags with either breakfast foods or lunch foods. The KFIP bags fly off the shelves so we had to restock constantly. We also prepared extras so volunteers in the following days don’t have to pack any more.
We then organized carts of NOSH bags. NOSH bags are the bags delivered to many homes that are filled with groceries. Each cart had to be filled with a certain number of NOSH bags. They also needed additional food added to them. It was tiring work and we worked for an hour nonstop.
Through our time at NOSH, we learned why our hard work matters. Our efforts go to many people who are in need of it and are not to waste. We saw how our contributions make a real world difference.
