On December 7th, between 1:30 and 4:30 pm AYLUS volunteers came to SUNY Old Westbury at the Long Island Chinese School to help out in classrooms. Volunteers attended one classroom for the three hour session. In each classroom, volunteers cleaned the classroom, printed out worksheets, and controlled the class during break.
During 3:30 – 4:30 pm, the Chinese School held a speaking competition for students between kindergarten and third grade. Each selected student had to recite a memorized poem or song to be judged by parents. Afterwards, the students were all rewarded from a selection of prizes. AYLUS volunteers helped judge and collect all the papers from the parents. Overall, with the help of AYLUS volunteers, they were able to make the Long Island Chinese School a safer and better learning experience.
