AYLUS Roslyn Volunteers at the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s Group Home (61st) on 11/22/25

On Saturday, November 22, from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, the Roslyn Branch of AYLUS volunteered at a CP Nassau Group Home in Farmingdale. CP Nassau (Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality services for children and adults with cerebral palsy. One of their programs offers residential life services in a healthy, safe, and secure home-like environment. The group home we visited today had 4 residents present.

Today, 2 members from the Roslyn Branch prepared a set of fun activities for the residents. We started by baking banana bread, with residents helping to mash bananas, mix ingredients, and prepare the batter. While the banana bread was baking, we played UNO, which the residents enjoyed and engaged with.

After the game, we worked together on a large Thanksgiving poster, guiding the residents’ hands, helping them place decorations, and allowing them to participate at their own pace.

Once the banana bread cooled, everyone enjoyed a slice. It was delicious and added to the warm, cheerful atmosphere of the afternoon.

Having only two volunteers was definitely a challenge. We had to divide our attention carefully between four residents, making sure that each person received enough support and engagement. At times, it was difficult to assist multiple residents simultaneously—especially when one resident struggled with hands-on activities and often pushed materials away. We addressed this by moving patiently, easing objects toward him, and allowing him to engage only when he felt comfortable.

These activities were meaningful and helped us get to know the residents better. Some were quieter or sleepier, while others stayed active and responsive throughout the session.
