On Saturday, November , from 1 pm to 4 pm, AYLUS Roslyn members volunteered at a group home in Bethpage under CP Nassau. CP Nassau (The Cerebal Palsy Association of Nassau County) assists children and adults with disabilities to achieve greater independence.
Today, we did a variety of activities with the residents in the group home. We first started with baking brownies. The process was slightly frustrating as the batter became too thick and dry but eventually the final mixture was too oily. We made sure that we were as inclusive as possible and that any resident that wanted to participate could. The residents stirred the batter, combined the ingredients, and measured the ingredients.
We then created fall themed crafts. We had cardboard umbrellas with leaves that had to be glued on and also flower bouquets that the residents could choose to make. We also made bracelets with them. The residents had the choice of making it themselves or picking out the colors and us making it for them.
While waiting for the brownies we played games with the residents. This included bingo and uno. The residents practiced their reading skills with only minor help from volunteers. Finally we ended our time off with some puzzles.
Through our volunteering we learned to take a step back and to let the residents do as much as they can. We should only step in when we need to. We see that the residents are capable and aim to support their independence.
Members who participated include (3 hours):
