On October 19th, 2025, the volunteers of the AYLUS Roslyn branch served as teaching assistants at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Our volunteer roles at the Chinese school included helping teachers and students with various activities and tasks.
As teacher assistants, we ease the teacher’s responsibilities while creating a fun, engaging learning environment. To begin the class, we greeted the teacher and children and helped them get set up. We did tasks such as answering questions, distributing and collecting worksheets, taking children to the restroom, and assisting the teacher with their lesson.
Today was the second day of CCALI’s culture classes. These culture classes included activities such as art, dance, calligraphy, and more. TAs guided students to their designated courses, allowing a smooth transition from class to class. After the culture classes, TAs helped students pack up their belongings and ensured they were brought to their parents or guardians.
Overall, having TA duties gave us insight into the difficulties teachers face every day. While the tasks given to the TAs were simple, they still reduced the teachers’ stress and enhanced a more engaging learning experience for the students. Volunteering at the school helped us develop patience and compassion for young children, allowing us to create a welcoming and positive environment for the children.
