On Monday, July 21st, Syosset AYLUS visited the Sangha Learning Center, a non-profit organization that provides a safe space for individuals with high-functioning ADHD, autism, and OCD to come together and decompress. During our visit, we focused on learning about birds and the ways in which they collaborate within their environments, drawing parallels to how humans work together as communities. We began the day with an informative presentation led by the Sangha Learning Center staff, who introduced us to different bird species commonly found in the area. Using a bird identification app, we were able to listen to and recognize a variety of bird calls. After, we created pinecone bird feeders. We first gathered materials, including pinecones, birdseed, and fat to serve as a natural adhesive. Using paintbrushes, we carefully spread the fat onto the pinecones, ensuring the seeds could stick securely. Once completed, we placed the feeders in the freezer so that the fat would harden and not stick to the birds’ wings when they feed.
