On Saturday, October 18th, from 1:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M, 5 members of AYLUS Roslyn’s group volunteered at CP Nassau’s Hicksville residential home.
When we first arrived, the residents and staff were very friendly when they saw us. We had 5 volunteers today, and there were 2-4 residents with us today, as 2 of the residents joined us for the beginning . We started off by baking delicious fall-themed pumpkin spice snickerdoodle cookies. The recipe needed the cookie mix, sugar, milk, butter, and an egg. The residents took turns pouring, mixing, and scooping the dough. First, we mixed the dry ingredients together, and then we mixed in the eggs, melted butter, and milk. After that, we mixed the cookie dough and formed itinto balls to put on the pan. They were cooked for 10 minutes and came out very nice. They tasted great and the residents really enjoyed eating them.
Then, we worked on 1 giant art project. Everyone worked together to make a Halloween-Themed poster with markers, stickers, and color-changing masks. We wrote in big letters “HAPPY HALLOWEEN”; drew spiders, pumpkins, and ghosts; and wrote all the resident’s names. The residents helped us color wooden pumpkin stacks and attach them to the poster. The staff really liked it and we hung it in their hallway. This activity took us about an hour, but it was very fun and rewarding at the end. It came out looking great, and we hope to do this activity again. After the poster, we did some mobility games with 2 of the residents. We used Velcro balls and let the residents throw and stick them to a Velcro dart board. We made sure to constantly move where we handed them the ball every time in order to work on mobility and hand-eye coordination. This got the residents standing up and exercising. Finally, because of the warm, sunny weather, we decided to go on a walk throughout the neighborhood. It was a beautiful day outside, and the residents really enjoyed the walk. We spent about 20 minutes outside before finally coming back in. We said goodbye and the home was very appreciative. The residents were very happy and tired from all the hard work. Today was very fun and we hope to see them again soon!
