On September 27th, AYLUS Great Neck went to Caumsett State Park for the removal of invasive plants and species to reduce the threat and improve the health of native species in the area from 9:30 – 12:00 pm (2 and a half hours). Specifically the following plants: the Porcelain berry, Multi Flora Rose, Mug wort and a Mile a Minute (an invasive vine) were removed as well as the Greenbriar (non-invasive). This removal was done through techniques such as pulling the weeds and vines from their root, or detaching them by cutting them off trees. We also made sure to kill any lantern flies seen in the vicinity as they are an invasive species of insect.
This is crucial to help maintain a balance in the ecosystem as invasive species will compete with native species for nutrients and eventually, not only outcompete them, but also rapidly increase and multiply in numbers. By removing the invasive species, the volunteers helped regulate the diversity of local plants in the park and overall made a positive contribution.
Participants include: Yingxiang Liu (2 ½ hours), Yuya Liu (2 ½ hours), Katherine Zeng (2 ½ hours), Annabella Kang (2 ½ hours), Lucas Kang (2 ½ hours), LuKang He(2 ½ hours)
