On September 21st, between 1:30 and 4:30 pm AYLUS volunteers met at the Long Island Chinese School at SUNY Westbury to serve as teaching assistants in classrooms. Each volunteer was sorted and dismissed to their own respective classrooms, where they managed various tasks such as cleaning the classroom, controlling student behavior and tutoring students in their work.
In the second hour of their work, volunteers left their classrooms to go assist in after school clubs for students in grades 1-3. This week, AYLUS Dix Hills volunteers helped out at the intermediate level chess club. While Coach Garrett taught students on the importance of the opening, volunteers controlled the classroom and helped sort the students into their desks. During playing time, volunteers served as judges in a mock tournament by checking for correct piece movement, dealing with arguments and marking on who won/lost. Thanks to the help of AYLUS Dix Hills volunteers, they were able to make the Long Island Chinese School a safer and engaging place to learn.
