On Sunday, September 14, from 1:30 to 4:30pm, the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch volunteered at the Long Island Chinese School as teaching assistants. Volunteers signed in and were assigned a room needing a teaching assistant, where they did various tasks normally done by the teacher such as passing out assignments and grading homework. This would give the teacher more time to focus on the students, so they could more effectively teach. Volunteers also assisted in the elective chess classes after normal classes ended, where they were split between three chess classes: easy, intermediate, and advanced. Volunteers kept order in the classrooms, calming down students and making sure they stayed focused. Volunteers set up the chess boards for the students to begin tournament games.
Because of the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch volunteers, students at the Long Island Chinese School had a more productive experience, and allowed teachers to more effectively teach after taking some of their workload.
