For their 191th event, the AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch teamed up with the NYC Parks department to beautify Weeping Beech Park during Saturday, August 30, 2025 from 8:30 a.m to 12:00 p.m. Our members worked with Roxanna, Ada, and Matias to clean, mulch, and weed the park.
Our members started the event off by mulching trees. We used shovels and pitchforks to put the mulch in wheelbarrows, which were then wheeled off. Our members lifted the extremely heavy wheelbarrows over the fence to dump the mulch on the dirt. Our members then used the rakes to spread the mulch. During that time, other members used garbage grabbers to pick up large amounts of trash. These trash pieces are then placed in garbage bags. Eventually, they finished and went to go help the mulchers. Meanwhile, the weeders used shovels and their hands to pull up weeds from the roots. This was extremely hard, as some of the weeds reached deep into the earth. Eventually, they also finished and went to go help the mulchers.
Soon, our mulchers realized that using only a few wheelbarrows was extremely inefficient, so they started using garbage bags too. These bags ended up being heavy and sometimes needed multiple people to lift it up. We used these bags to dump mulch into more areas, where they could be spread. In the end, we used up an extremely large pile of mulch to mulch a large area.
