On August 27, 2025, AYLUS Oakland Gardens went to help out with an event that was hosted by the school. This was AYLUS Oakland Gardens’ 190th event, and it was from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The event the school hosted was meant to welcome the new students who would be joining the school this upcoming school year.
AYLUS Oakland Garden members hosted a face painting stand in the playground right next to the school. They borrowed chairs and a table from the school, so there would be a place for the members to set their supplies and a place to seat the incoming kids going to the stand. At first, it was a little slow, since there weren’t many people at the playground. As more time went by, more and more kids wanted to get their faces painted. Face painting requires a lot of patience from the kids and the face painters because it can take some time to create the drawing. The face painters also had to properly communicate with the kids, so the face painter could know what drawing to do and if the kids were uncomfortable. This event was also a great way for our members to build their social skills, as this event requires them to communicate with other people. Some challenges that occurred during the event was that the face paint we were using was oil-based, making it difficult for the face painters to apply color or mix colors. Luckily, there was one water-based face paint. So all the members shared using it and working with what they had. It was worth it in the end because we got to see the smiling faces of the kids after they got their faces painted.
The goal for the school event was to welcome all the new students who would be attending the school in September. It was meant to be a fun day for the kids and a way for them to see what the school would be like. AYLUS Oakland Gardens wanted to help the school achieve that goal. The face painting stand that we set up was to bring joy to the kids and let them express themselves in a fun way. Now, we would like to thank the school for setting up the event to welcome all the new students.
