On Friday, August 8th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., members from the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the NOSH delivers! Food Pantry. NOSH delivers’ goal is to provide food and necessary goods to the people of North Shore.
It was not a day with a particularly large amount of shoppers but a day with a lot of work to do. We began with a brief guide to how to take shoppers around. Afterwards, all the volunteers were capable of leading shoppers around the pantry. Then, with the arrival of more donations, the volunteers dispersed to do various tasks. These tasks include bringing deliveries inside, moving boxes of food around, and disposing garbage. While not being assigned a specific task, volunteers would straighten the shelves and clean the floor.
With an event that NOSH’s kids food program was going to be at, there was more materials that needed preparing. We had to have materials ready for 500 people to come and decorate bags for food to be placed inside for kids. The volunteers helped gather and organize materials such as decorative gems, markers, stickers, and more. We also had to make sure the supplies could be properly transferred to the event site. With all of the materials scattered around the food pantry, volunteers had to hunt for specific items.
Finally, we celebrated the birthdays of a few volunteered and enjoyed slices of cake. All of these tasks showed us how much work goes into running a food pantry besides the food donations. We learned the importance of organization and teamwork to make work easy.
