San Diego Branch Hosted the 1st English for the Elderly On-Ground Meeting on July 30th, 2025

Reported by Colin Xie

On July 30th, members of the AYLUS San Diego branch collaborated with the Alliance of Chinese Americans (ACA) to organize the 1st on-ground meeting for tutors and students of English for the Elderly, a program in which AYLUS volunteer tutors teach English in weekly one-on-one lessons to elderly men and women for use in their daily lives.

During this meeting, volunteer tutors and elderly students shared experiences and socialized over food and drink. Some could not make it in-person and instead participated through an online Zoom session.

The volunteers and elderly students also discussed features that could be implemented in a website designed for English learners. This website is currently being built by English for the Elderly volunteers, and is planned to include a centralized resource hub for English learning, on-the-go AI translator, and user-friendly design that takes the learners’ needs into account.

The following members participated in the 1st on-ground meeting for English for the Elderly, 1.5 volunteer hours each:

Colin Xie, Emily Wu, Max Yang, Sophia Wu
