On Monday, July 28th, from 6 pm to 8 pm, volunteers from AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch dedicated their time to making homemade cards and crafts for senior citizens that they will be visiting at a senior center in the coming weeks. This was our 180 event.
AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch will be going to Little Neck Care Center to visit elderly citizens soon, so our members decided to make little gifts for them. For example, we made ”everlasting flowers” out of pipe cleaners, which are flowers that will never wilt. They come in many bright and vibrant colors to add more fun to a day in the life of senior citizens.
We made sure to cut off and remove the sharp part of the pipe cleaner so there would be no chance of them accidentally injuring or cutting themselves with the crafts. We had to use scissors to cut up some sharp parts off of pipe cleaners and fold them in a way which would render them harmless.
These “everlasting flowers” come in keychains, bouquets, and some in small little pots. Some examples of these flowers were tulips, roses, and sunflowers. We were taught things like how to make the petals and leaves to eventually combine into a bigger flower at the end by one of our parent advisors.
The materials we used to make these flowers were hot glue, pipe cleaners, and sometimes a pot for the flowers. We had to be careful not to get burned with the hot glue, as one of our parent advisors helped us do it. The pipe cleaners were sometimes sharp at the metal tip so our parent advisors made sure to get rid of the hazard. We folded entire pipe cleaners, cut them down to smaller pieces, and turned those shortened pieces into petals. We later combined the petals at the end.
