On the morning of Saturday, July 5th, from 9:30 am to 12pm, volunteers from the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch returned to Planting Fields State Park for another round of work. They spread mulch over designated plant beds, carefully staying within the marked boundaries. This helped suppress the regrowth of thistles and other unwanted plants while also enhancing the area’s visual appeal.
In addition to mulching, volunteers planted new flowers to replace ones that had died. Before planting, they scored the sides of the root balls to encourage the roots to spread out into the surrounding soil rather than remain confined in their original shape. Special care was taken to ensure the flowers were planted at the proper depth, with the surface of the root ball level with the soil. This helps prevent the roots from circling and promotes healthier growth.
These efforts contribute not only to the aesthetics of the park but also to its overall ecosystem health by preventing invasive regrowth and introducing thriving, desirable plant life.
