San Diego Branch Hosted the 262nd Online English for the Elderly Program on May 30th – June 1st, 2025

Reported by Colin Xie

On May 30th – June 1st, San Diego students of AYLUS participated in the 262nd online English for the Elderly activity. The goal of this activity is to help elderly men and women from China learn the basics of English so that they’re able to use them in their daily lives.

Due to current circumstances, English for the Elderly is hosted online, through Zoom video conferences. First, both the elderly and the volunteers joined the main room for attendance. Then, they were organized into several breakout rooms. Greater volunteer participation has allowed lessons to be split into one-on-one sessions, which are more personal and help to build communication skills for both the volunteer tutors and elderly students.

Through this program, AYLUS volunteers were able to teach 9 elderly men and women common English phrases and sentences. Not only were the “students” able to improve their understanding of and ability to speak the English language, but the volunteers also improved their patience and confidence through this event.

The following members participated in the 262nd Virtual English for the Elderly activity, 2 volunteer hours for each session:

Friday, May 30th: Lauren Kan

Sunday, June 1st: Colin Xie, Emily Chen, Enke Luo, Katelyn Li, Kenneth Chen, Liana Xie
