On June 28th, 2025, our team hosted our 168th event at Kissena Park from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. This event is one of the special events we host in the year as our award ceremony will be part of it as well. With the weather being cool and there not being any rain, it makes today the perfect day for us to work and have the award ceremony.
Due to the rain from the night, there were some puddles of water where the ceremony will take place, so our board members used brooms in order to sweep away the water. Not only that, as we have made posters introducing our branch to the public, we tied up the posters to the fence and scaffolding through wires and ribbons. The reason we used wires and ribbons is that we can easily remove and reuse the wires and ribbons for future events when we need to use our posters again. As there were a lot of members at today’s event, our board members helped Roxana hand out the tools that we will be using. Such tools are shovels, brooms, rakes, and loppers. Under the guidance of Roxana, our team was to clear up the path leading towards the bocce court from both directions so that the community would have a nice view while heading to the bocce court. We used the shovels and rakes to pile the dirt and leaves onto either side of the path before using the shovels to scoop up these piles and throw it over the fence. Not only that, the soil that is on the path allowed for some plants to spread their roots, which members carrying loppers will cut the roots with so that it will be easier for people with shovels to scoop the soil and throw it over the fence.
Then our members gathered around for the award ceremony after putting away their tools, where our Senator John C. Liu gave us a motivational speech, where every one of us are young leaders as we are getting out and helping our community. One part of the speech really stuck with us as it really matched what AYLUS stands for, “You want to inspire, you want to motivate other people, you want to work together, that’s what leadership is all about. The first ingredient of leadership is just showing up. Taking the initiative.”. Due to his busy schedule, he was able to personally present to the top 15 members with the most hours in our branch with awards. The rest of the awards are presented by Roxana Tejada, Kissena Park’s Supervisor 1, who we worked with every time at Kissena Park. After all the awards were presented, Roxana’s boss, Jobe Walker the Park’s Supervisor 2, gave a motivational speech to our members as well for our hard work to better the Park and how much change we have brought. This speech inspired us to work harder as we can continue to bring more change to our community. Then, he presented to our team the new board members of 2025-2026. Before our members were able to go and view the posters, Jobe Walker presented two of our most hardworking grandparents with awards, thanking them for their hard work in making the community better whenever they bring their grandkids out to volunteer as well.
Then, our members went around to look at the posters that informed them of all the various events we have as not everyone was able to attend every single event. This allowed for members to be further acquainted with all the accomplishments that our branch has achieved.
We would like to offer our thanks to the Senator John Liu for taking time out of his busy schedule to attend our award ceremony. We would like to thank Jobe Walker and Roxana Tejada for all their hard work in bettering Kissena Park as well as handing out the awards today. We would like to thank our parent advisors for their hard work in organizing every event and our award ceremony. We would like to thank our members for their hard work and further encourage everyone to continue working hard so we can make more positive impacts on the community.
