On Tuesday June 24th, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered with NOSH Delivers. NOSH Delivers is a food pantry in Glen Cove that strives to make sure families in need have access to food.
Today, we started out by assembling NOSH bags that contain fruits and vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and pears. We created an assembly line where we passed down the bags to be filled and placed in a shopping cart to be delivered to families in need. In the food pantry, items such as canned goods, pasta, and beans were offered to shoppers as well as in the farmers market, customers had the option to pick between different kinds of dairy, baked goods and produce. Once we finished assembling the NOSH bags, we quickly held a meeting to discuss the future plans with NOSH. Something else Courtney said was that she wants all the registration and management of the NOSH summer program to be digital due to the world being more reliant on technology. We offered to help her with this program and to help create a digital hub to help manage all the programs.
After the meeting had ended, we decorated KFIP bags with colorful art supplies such as gems, stickers and markers, so that kids could enjoy the artwork while they got to enjoy their meal inside the bag. KFIP or the Kid Food Independence Program is a program where colorful decorated bags filled with either a breakfast or lunch meal is inside so that young kids can have access to breakfast and lunch without having their parents worry about the cost. Roughly 100 bags are made and received by children a week which shows its impact on the community.
Later in the day a new delivery to NOSH arrived, bringing in snacks, drinks and more. We unpacked the goods that arrived and restocked the shelves so they could be full for customers to pick the items they wished to receive. We ended the day with sweeping the floors for any crumbs and organizing the shelves so the next time we come, it will be more organized for any customers. This experience has taught us to always help the community because when you are struggling the community will help you.
