On Thursday, June 19th, from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., members of the AYLUS Roslyn Branch (Remon Cao and Yinshuo Gao) volunteered with NOSH Delivers, a nonprofit organization based in Glen Cove, NY. NOSH Delivers fights food insecurity by providing fresh groceries and pantry staples to families and individuals in need across Nassau County. They collaborate with local farms, food banks, and volunteers to distribute these goods to soup kitchens, shelters, and the community directly.
This week, our volunteer work focused on food prep, restocking, and community outreach. One of our first tasks was to cut and shuck corn that had just been donated in bulk. This required teamwork, coordination, and attention to cleanliness, as the corn would later be packaged and distributed to families. Removing the husks and trimming the ends ensured that the corn was ready for cooking or immediate use.
After preparing the corn, we helped restock the pantry shelves. This involved organizing items like canned goods, dry pasta, sauces, and condiments, making sure everything was properly labeled and accessible. Maintaining a clean, well-ordered stock area is essential for efficient packing and fair distribution to those in need.
Later in the shift, we moved to NOSH’s outdoor “farmer’s market” station, where we handed out fresh produce to walk-up community members. Items distributed included loaves of bread, onions, potatoes, carrots, avocados, tomatoes, apples, clementines, and mangoes. Each visitor was allowed a specific selection to ensure fair sharing. We also ensured the displays remained stocked and presentable, making the experience feel more like a dignified shopping trip than a food handout.
Throughout the day, people who visited NOSH and the farmer’s market were warm and appreciative. The experience highlighted the impact of hands-on service and showed how even basic tasks like cleaning corn or stacking shelves contribute meaningfully to supporting those in need.
This opportunity reminded us that service can take many forms—and every role, no matter how small, matters. By working together, we were able to make food more accessible to local families and support NOSH’s mission to alleviate food insecurity. We look forward to continuing our efforts with NOSH in the future.
