AYLUS Great Neck Branch Volunteers at State Park on 6/7/25 (36th)

Great Neck Branch Volunteer at Bethpage State Park on 6/7/2025 (36nd)

On Saturday, June 7, Aylus volunteers participated with others at Bethpage State Park during 9:00 to 11:00am. The total volunteer time for this event was two hours.

First, the Aylus volunteers gathered at the main parking lot, and the volunteer coordinator passed out gloves and tools for volunteers to use. The main task of the day was to remove mugwort, an invasive plant species that harms native ecosystems. Volunteers worked hard to pull out all the roots of the mugwort, collected them, and put them into large fabric bags.

After gathering the mugwort, all the bags were loaded into a car to be taken away for proper disposal. Since mugwort often grows mixed with beneficial native plants—such as sunflowers, goldenrods, and milkweed—volunteers were careful to avoid damaging good plants while weeding. In total, the team helped clear out a significant amount of mugwort, contributing meaningfully to the park’s restoration.

Bethpage State Park also supports local wildlife such as birds, rabbits, and deer. It’s a peaceful place to enjoy nature and give back to the environment. The volunteers’ efforts today made a meaningful impact and left a memorable experience for all participants.

Members who participated include:

Felicia Liu, Yingxiang Liu, Yuya Liu, Jolynn Li, Derrick Hu, Yangzilin Hu

all volunteers received 2 hours.
