On June 6th, from 4:30-5:30pm, the Great Neck Branch played sports with kids at Firefighter park. Playing sports is a healthy and educational way for kids to socialize with each other and have a great time. Jack and Yucheng played soccer. At first, he’s a bit shy but quickly he’s off running and chasing the ball. Cody, the other volunteer, formed a triangle with Sumeng and Melody to play some boomerang with the local kids we met for the first time. We laughed and had a wonderful evening as we watched the Sun skid slowly and hide among the trees. Perhaps that is the inspiration for some awesome and lighthearted tag and hide and seek in the playground. We ran in and out of the imaginary castle floating in our heads. Laughter is heard for the duration of our time that we spent with the kids. In the future, we hoped to bring a larger variety of sport equipment to play with the kids. Reflecting over the time we shared with the communities, I realized fun and joyous things happened through small actions. We don’t even have to try.
