City and Neighbor Support: Volunteers Assist with Community Self-Defense Training for Youth in May

On May 3rd and May 10th, Pearland youth volunteers supported a community self-defense class hosted in partnership with Shotokan Karate Academy. The sessions were open to the public and aimed at promoting personal safety, awareness, and confidence among youth 10-16 years old

The training began with an introduction to fundamental principles of situational awareness. Instructors discussed key safety practices, such as being mindful of surroundings, recognizing potential threats, and responding appropriately to dangerous situations. Participants learned important “dos and don’ts” for avoiding conflict and protecting themselves in public spaces.

Following the discussion, trainers led hands-on, one-on-one self-defense exercises. Attendees practiced basic techniques for blocking, escaping holds, and de-escalating confrontations, all under the close guidance of experienced karate instructors.

AYLUS Pearland youth volunteers played an important role in the success of the event. They helped with setup and organization, ensured refreshments (food and water) were available for participants, and stayed afterward to assist with cleanup. Their presence contributed to a smooth, welcoming, and safe experience for all who attended.

This initiative reflects AYLUS Pearland’s ongoing commitment to promoting safety, wellness, and civic engagement in the local community.
