On May 17th 2025, our team hosted our 156th event. The AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch has partnered with African Library Project in order to collect books to donate. This is the second year that we have done this, motivated by our success from last year.
African Library Project changes lives, book by book, together with partners in Africa and North American volunteers, to create, improve, and sustain libraries in African communities. Their grassroots approach mobilizes volunteers in North America to collect and donate gently used books and an international network of partners in Africa. They work in English-speaking countries in Sub-Saharan Africa that have a significant need for books with partners who can meet their criteria for sustainable library development. Their book drive approach allows North Americans the ability to share their love for reading by providing books to fellow learners that do not have the same access to children’s books.
As we are ready to ship the boxes filled with books out, we did another inspection of the boxes, making sure everything has labels on them and the boxes are properly taped so it does not burst from the books during travel. Then, members would carry the boxes out of the house where we store them and into our parent advisor’s car to ship it out at the Post Office. However, since we had a lot of boxes, we had to make multiple trips to have all the boxes at the post office waiting to be shipped out. After we had all the boxes in one place, our members carried them into the Post Office, where we finally paid for the shipping fees and had them shipped out to Africa. We hope that everyone will enjoy these books and have a great time reading them.
Thank you to our members for all their hard work.
