On Sunday, May 11th, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island from 1:30 – 5:00. As volunteers, it was our responsibility to help the teachers and kids with lots of tasks and activities.
First, we greeted the kids as they entered the classrooms and helped them in unpacking and getting ready for class. After that, we helped the teacher with different tasks like collecting up the students’ homework, escorting the children to the restroom, and helping pass out worksheets. During class, TAs helped in working with kids who might have been struggling or finding it hard to understand . During class today we made mother’s day gifts and practiced different performances where the parents would come and watch the kids do. At the end of the day, TAs made pickup easy by helping students with packing up and making sure they had a ride and a parent or guardian to pick them up.
Overall, our work as TAs gave us an understanding into the daily tasks that teachers face. The assignments we were given were simple, but they eased the teachers of some of their workload. In addition to teaching us patience and empathy for small kids, volunteering at the school allowed us to contribute to the development of a warm, fun atmosphere that students are happy to be a part of.
