Oakland Gardens Branch Sort Books for Books for Taiwan Part 2 (05/13/2025)

On May 13, 2025, 5:30pm to 8:00pm, our team hosted our 155th event. The AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch has partnered with Books for Taiwan in order to collect books to donate. This is the second year that we have done this, motivated by our success from last year.

Books for Taiwan is a non-profit volunteer group in New Jersey, USA. Through fundraising and volunteers, they collect English books for rural schools, prisons, and catering schools in Taiwan. These books are also from libraries or the community, which are transported through ships. They have been doing this for over 20 years, donating a total of 1.2 millions books. Their original mission was to give back to Taiwan’s hometown and provide a large range of supplementary teaching materials for free so everyone can be familiar with English.

After the collection of the books, our team went through the books in order to sort them into appropriate categories for the library. Books are sorted into appropriate grade levels. Then, we went through the books to make sure they are lightly used books in alright conditions. Books that are ripped in any way, really crinkled, have writing in them, or damaged through any stains on them are discarded while those have slight tears in them we would use some tape to repair it. We have collected a total of 1000 books for this cause, packing them neatly into boxes so that they would be secure during mailing.

Thank you to our members for all their hard work.
