On May 3rd, four AYLUS volunteers came to help out with the Agape Special Needs program. Since there were less volunteers than usual, volunteers each took on about 2-4 special needs friends this time. The program seeks to help teach them about Jesus with lessons involving video explanations of Bible stories, images, verses, and worship songs to dance to. We had a lot of fun doing the dances! Also, there were songs in English as well as Chinese to accommodate those who had Chinese as their first language. Then, after all of that is finished, there were a series of games we played with the special needs friends. First, though, they could use (fake) money they collected throughout the day to purchase snacks, which helped teach them about financial use. First in the games was a linked-arms hula-hoop game, to which you would move a hula-hoop between people without letting go of their hands. Next, there was a backward throwing game, where a volunteer would either throw crumpled paper balls with the special needs friend as the catcher, or be the ones to catch them with the special needs friend as the thrower—then, they would switch! Lastly, was an egg balancing game, where the special needs friends would balance an egg on a spoon and walk in a circle around four chairs in a relay race, while volunteers cheered them on. Though less volunteers came this time, we still thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and we’re sure that the special needs kids did, too!
