City and Neighbor Support: Youth Volunteers Lend a Hand at the Houston Botanic Garden on March 29, 2025

On a refreshing spring day, AYLUS youth volunteers gathered at the Houston Botanic Garen for a hands-on learning and volunteering service experience. The light rain and cool air created the perfect conditions for the plants.
Guided by the knowledgeable staff horticulturists, Phillips and Laura, the volunteers took part in a variety of gardening tasks. One was the removal of out-of-season annual flowers, making way for fresh, vibrant new planting. With trowels and gloves in hand, the youth worked diligently and learned how different plants transition through the seasons and the importance of replanting to maintain the beauty of the garden. After clearing the flower beds, the volunteers had the rewarding experience of arranging and planting some new flowers.
The volunteers also helped spread pine needle mulch around several flower beds. This natural mulch not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the garden but also helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Beyond the physical work, the experience proved to be a valuable educational opportunity for the volunteers. The day ended with smiles and a sense of accomplishment.
Volunteers (4 hours, 9am-1pm): Leah Hong, Brendon Jiang, Jerry Mao, Michelle Gu, Allen Gu, Brian Zhang, Owen Song, Jerry Liu, Wilson Gao, Katherine Chi, Grace Wu, Caroline Mao.
Parent on Duty (4 hours): Furong Yuan/Bingnan Gu (Michelle Gu and Allen Gu), Jie Wu (Allison Zhang), Kun Liu (Grace Wu).
