On February 8th, 2025, five AYLUS volunteers helped out at the Special Needs Program at DCFC. Participants danced to music and discussed the importance of respecting boundaries, which fostered a sense of connection among the group. Following the learning session, the kids took on a hands-on interactive project to make pet toys out of donated clothing to be donated later on to a local animal shelter. This creative activity inspired teamwork and ended the program with an accomplished note. Overall, us AYLUS volunteers learned about the value of community and contributing to a meaningful cause.

The current 4-string pet toy appears to be too challenging for some of our SN friends to create independently. After testing the 3-string pet toy with a cat and consulting with the DCFC SN needs teacher, we decided to use the 3-string version for our SN friends in the future.

Volunteer hours:

Karen Zhou (Event Leader) – 4 hours + 1 hour preparing pet toy material for SN friends
Ellie Zhou – 3 hours + 1 hour preparing pet toy material for SN friends
Jiahe (Joy) Tian – 3 hours
Elin Wang – 3 hours
Andrew Wang – 3 hours
Karen Li – 1 hour making and testing 3 strings pet toy
Tianlu Zhou – 2 hours for SN coordinator for 02/01/2025 and 02/08/2025 event
