On January 26th, from 1:30 to 4:30, AYLUS Dix Hills volunteers helped at the Long Island
Chinese School. This time the school was celebrating Lunar New Year, so all the
students were relocated into a separate building to watch the festivities.
AYLUS volunteers helped guide their classes to the assigned seats at the
viewing halls. Then for the next three hours there were dragon/lion dances, plays on
traditional stories and even some singing. Each of the kids received Lunar New Year
crafts like a rainbow dragon and foldable lanterns. Red envelopes were distributed to
the students which signified good luck. At around 2:30pm everyone was given pizza,
buns, and some other Chinese foods.
When the event finally ended at around 4:00pm, AYLUS volunteers helped usher
everyone out. The venue was quite messy, so the volunteers helped pick up any trash
that was left. They also helped dispose of any leftover food for the party. The Lunar
New Year festival was a great success, and the contributions of AYLUS volunteers
significantly enhanced the experience for everyone.
