On Sunday, January 5, 2025, 15 AYLUS Bellaire Branch members volunteered at the Beacon Day Center to help end homelessness with the start of the new year. The Beacon is a non-profit organization that serves individuals experiencing homelessness with daily services including breakfast and lunch meals, laundry, and showers, as well as counseling resources, mentoring, and access to housing.
Members helped wash freshly grown vegetables from the garden including radish, peppers, bok choy, scallions, and lettuce. Three AYLUS volunteers chopped the scallions finely for garnish. Other volunteers helped to wash dirty dishes and give out sugar packets and water. Outside the kitchen, volunteers helped sort first aid kits and hand warmers from boxes into different bags. During lunchtime, the volunteers checked off, warmly greeted the homeless individuals, and asked them for their food choices. The lunch meal included BBQ chicken, sausage pasta, mixed vegetables, rice, green beans, mixed fruit, vegetable salad, and dressing. Once lunchtime was over, volunteers cleaned up the kitchen, washed dishes, mopped the floor, and placed leftover food into storage containers.
