On December 7th, the AYLUS Houston branch volunteered with Brookwood Community, a place dedicated to allowing adults with disabilities to take part in meaningful work and foster an environment that allows for a sense of belonging. Specifically, volunteers took part in helping the Brookwood Community Open House Play to run as smoothly as possible. Our volunteers greet guests, and hand out desserts before and after the play, with all ages being involved. During the play, volunteers were tasked with being mindful audience members, and ensured that support for the play was displayed, in order to foster the positive environment that Brookwood prides itself on. During our time there, we also learned about the stories of residents, and guests, which allowed us to see the extent of what the community does to ensure that adults with disabilities have a place where they are able to feel safe and welcomed. At the end of the open house, volunteers helped clean up, and ensured that the performance venue was spotless for the events that would occur in the following days. This opportunity allowed us to see the different ways in which volunteers are able to help the community, and allowed for our members to have a deeper understanding of the lives of adults with disabilities.
