This is the 131st event held by AYLUS Oakland Gardens, on Saturday November 16th 2024 from 8:40 to 12:10. In honor of Veteran’s day, we partnered with Maureen and Ada to clean up the Lawrence Triangle, additionally we put up an American flag in front of the Triangle. Before we began the clean up, Maureen told us that the Lawrence Triangle was named after General George J. Lawrence Sr. , a veteran of World war one and recipient of a Silver star metal. Dr. Lawrence also worked in the hospital west of the triangle.
During the event Maureen split us up by age group ; we were sorted into three groups : one high school group, consisting of about 10 people; one middle school group, consisting of about 30 people; and one elementary group, consisting of about 5 people. Each group was assigned a task to complete. The high school group was assigned to trim the bushes and trees. The middle school group was assigned to remove the debris from the triangle and place them into recyclable paper trash bags. The middle school group managed to remove and collect 62 bags of yard waste. The elementary group was assigned to clean up and remove trash from the Triangle. After the High school group was done with trimming they helped the elementary group with cleaning up trash. The combined elementary and high school group filled up two bags of trash, and they collected a variety of old fruits and vegetables, such as mangos and potatoes. They also collected half a trash bag of bottles and bottle caps. We found ten bottles of whisky, a bottle of white rum, two shot bottles of Jack Daniel’s, two shot bottles of Jameson, seven beer bottles, and two bottles of tequila. Maureen gave us a snack break at 10:30, Maureen provided us with hot chocolate and bread rolls with nutella as well as bagels with butter and cream cheese. After our snack break we moved the numerous bags of debris and trash to the front of the triangle which is the south west corner. Near the end of the event a park service garbage truck arrived towards the front of the Triangle. Our members helped load the garbage on the truck. While some members were loading the garbage another group of AYLUS members added about 200 flower bulbs on the north east corner of the Triangle.
When we were finished, we gathered around the front of the Triangle for a group picture with everyone that helped us today. We would like to thank Maureen for providing us with snacks and we would also like to thank her for the opportunity to work with her again. We would like to thank all the park service employees for helping us clean up and restore the Lawrence Triangle, and honoring Veterans day in the process. Lastly we would like to thank all participants in today’s event for helping us clean up Lawrence Triangle.
