On November 11th, from 1:30 to 4:30 AYLUS volunteers went to a Long Island Chinese School to become teaching assistants for teachers and students. Volunteers chose a classroom and had to help with various tasks. Like helping students pay attention in class, run errands for the teachers, or hand out worksheets in class. Volunteers were given 10 minute breaks every 50 minutes. Besides staying in the classroom, a few AYLUS members also helped out at the Chinese School’s chess club. There were two clubs, an intermediate and advanced club. That week the advanced chess teacher was out, so AYLUS members helped watch over the class and make sure students were ready to learn. After the short lesson the members helped set up boards and hand out pieces. When all the students got paired up the members closely watched all the games to make sure no illegal moves were made, and helped keep score on who won or lost. After the club had ended members finally cleaned up the classroom, pushed in chairs, cleaned up the boards and found any missing pieces. By helping out in class, volunteers greatly improve the learning environment for teachers and students.
