AYLUS Syosset Cuts Down Invasive Plants at the Planting Fields Arboretum (11/16/24)

Reported by Anson Ye

On 11/16/24, members of AYLUS Syosset worked with members of AYLUS Great Neck at the Planting Fields Arboretum to cut down and remove invasive shrubs as well as ivy. Members first used garden shears to cut down unwanted shrubs—shrubs without a pink ribbon tied to them—, and then disposed of the plants. By removing these plants, native tree species are able to grow with less competition, promoting biodiversity as well as helping maintain the ecosystem. Then, both groups removed the invasive English ivy from the surrounding area and trees. Removing the English ivy was crucial as it grows on native plants or the branches of trees, smothering them and stealing vital resources, preventing them from obtaining sunlight or water, or producing new leaves.

Members who participated include (All 2.5 hours): Anson Ye, Vincent Ye, Michelle Huang, Riley Lin, Ryan Lin, Jeffrey Chen, Geyan Lou, Ethan Lee, Madison Lee, Bryan Wan, and Justin Lin.
