On November 9th, the Syosset AYLUS organization attended the Long Island Native Plant Initiative, where we assisted both inside and outside the greenhouse. Some of the tasks performed by the Syosset AYLUS members included sifting seeds, as the greenhouse needed the most help with this in preparation for winter. The greenhouse had a large batch of plants that required sifting to ensure proper care for the season. Another group of Syosset AYLUS members worked outside, spreading rice sand around the pots to prevent animals from digging them up and damaging the plants. We also helped by cleaning dead leaves off plants to improve their appearance. Rice sand is beneficial for plants as it contains nutrients and minerals that help them grow. Additionally, the starch in rice water can aid in plant growth, rooting, and propagation, while also reducing the risk of over-fertilization. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization was successful in helping the Long Island Native Plant Initiative prepare for the winter season, particularly in protecting biodiversity in the greenhouse.
