On Sunday, November 3rd, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island’s Chinese school from 1:30PM – 5:00PM. Our jobs as volunteers was to become teacher assistants and help kids with various activities and classwork.
Working as TA’s, we helped reduce stress from the teacher and maintained a fun and lively environment for the kids. First, we greeted each kid with kindness and asked and made sure that each one of the kids had done their homework from the week prior. During the class, we helped pass papers to the kids, manage the powerpoint for the teacher when needed, and helped kids who were struggling in class. During a break, kids who had coupons, either received during class for working hard or received by parents , were allowed to buy delicious snacks at the snack table and eat them. After that we went back to work until it was time for culture classes. Culture classes included Calligraphy, Art 1 and 2, Dance, Gym, Yoga and more existing classes. After this class, it was finally time for dismissal. We made sure every kid went out of the classroom with the correct parent and stayed with any lingering students waiting for their parents.
It was a very inspiring experience working with kids and making an impact for the kids and the teachers. We hope to continue bringing an impact on these kids and helping teachers with taking care of kids.
