Aylus Great Neck Branch Volunteer at Planting Field Arboretum on November 2nd, 2024
On November 2nd, Saturday, from 9:30 to 11:00, Aylus Great Neck headed towards Planting Fields to start work in a new area close to the garden we’ve been focusing on. This is the third section our branch is working on in this park. We’ve completed two different areas previously and started another area today. This area, like many others in the park, has become overgrown with invasive species specifically the English ivy, crowding out native plants and limiting biodiversity. By clearing this area, we’ll be helping to restore balance in the park’s ecosystem and make room for more intentional plantings.
Today, our work will include cutting down small trees and shrubs, along with removing vines and ivy that have spread across the area. Everyone collaboratively pulled out the English Ivy from the area. After that, we raked up the leaves so we could see the roots of those ivyes to further exterminate them from the ground. Some roots were very hard to get out which is when we were given a shovel to dig the roots up. Our goal was to create open space for a new collection of rare plant material that will enhance the garden’s diversity and beauty. Through these efforts, we’re not only improving the landscape but also helping to preserve unique plant species for future generations to enjoy.
