On November 2nd, the Syosset AYLUS Organization went to the Long Island Native Plant Initiative to assist Pam, one of the greenhouse workers, who guided us in completing our tasks and assigned us our next activities. Today, we had a large group of AYLUS members. Some of us worked inside the greenhouse, helping to sift seeds in preparation for the winter season by collecting seeds from the plants. We used special tools and wore gloves to protect ourselves from thorns that might come from the plants. Using a specific tool, we sifted the seeds over a grater, which allowed them to fall into a bucket below. Once a bucket was filled, another group used a finer tool to sift through the remaining material, removing any leaves and primarily collecting only the seeds for future planting. Another section of the AYLUS organization worked outside the greenhouse, removing dead plants from containers so that we could use them for new plants. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS Organization was very successful in assisting the greenhouse, helping to sustain the plant cycle by collecting seeds for future planting, and ultimately maintaining native plant biodiversity.
