AYLUS Oakland Gardens helps to conserve and add to Crocheron Park (10/19/2024)

This is the 127th event held by AYLUS Oakland Gardens on October 19th 2024. During the event AYLUS Oakland Gardens helped the three grounds keepers (Paul Brunn, Dana Gump, and Gene) to clean up, mulch, add new plants, and water in Crocheron park for 3 and a half hours.

At the beginning of the event Paul, Dana, and Gene split our main party into three groups. Each groundskeeper took a group to a different area. The first group led by Paul, consisting of 12 AYLUS members, was assigned to remove acorns from areas where the park didn’t want them to sprout into trees. They used old shopping bags to collect the acorns and move them off the grass and the collected acorns were deposited in designated areas in the patches of forests. After they were finished with removing the acorns they removed debris, such as large branches and twigs, depositing them next to the wood chipper where they would be turned into wood chips and spread over the park. After they were finished with their assignments they were added to Dana’s group to help move mulch.

The second group, consisting of 15 AYLUS members led by Dana was assigned to move mulch onto newly planted Blackhaw and add five new plants to the area. Dana introduced the group to a plant that we were going to add to the forest, it was called the Spice Bush and described its smell as really fruity. Before planting the spice bushes Dana tasked the group to move mulch to 12 different areas including the young plants, creating a ring around each. Dana split the group into two parties: 9 members to help load mulch into the containers carried by the another 6 members. The various containers ranged from plastic tubs to wheelbarrows. The members coming from Paul’s group helped pull some remaining weeds from the woods. Lastly the group adds the Spice Bushes to an empty patch on the outskirts of the forest and they watered them.

The third group, consisting of 11 AYLUS members, led by Gene, was assigned to the garden. The 11 group members were split into two teams, one team handled mulch with a few shovels and a wheelbarrow, while the second team added some new plants to the back of the garden. After the group was done adding to the back of the garden they watered the majority with Jugs of water, because the water line was closed off for the winter as freezing water can damage pipes.

Lastly we would like to thank Gene, Dana, and Paul for helping us tidying up the park, and we would like to thank all the AYLUS members who came to help during the event. We hope to work with Gene, Dana, and Paul further in the future to help conserve Crocheron Park. Thank you to all who helped during the event.
