On Saturday, October 19, nine volunteers from AYLUS helped remove the invasive plant species English Ivy, which is destructive and hazardous to nearby plants and trees, throughout the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center. Removing invasive species is crucial in maintaining the native ecosystem as not doing so will allow the invasive species to jeopardize the biodiversity and health of the natural environment by preying on the native species and/or resources. The participating volunteers wore gloves and worked together to remove as many English ivy as they could with the time allotted by pulling them out from the ground and contained them using various tools provided by the center’s staff. The volunteers learned the importance of protecting the native ecosystem and ways they could do so.
Members participated:
Darren Gao (2 hours), Jeffery Chen (2.5 hours), Riley Lin (2.5 hours), Michael Qiao (2.5 hours), Ethan Lee (2 hours), Madison Lee (2 hours), Bryan Wan (2 hours), Michelle Huang (2 hours), and Elva Chen (2.5 hours)
