AYLUS Roslyn Volunteers at the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s Group Home (27th) on October 12th

On Saturday, October 12th, from 1 PM to 4 PM, members from AYLUS’s Roslyn branch volunteered at a group home under the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, also known as CP Nassau. CP Nassau specializes in providing programs for disabled children and adults to help them reach independent living.

On this Saturday, members decided to Halloween themed activities with the residents of this group home. Volunteers helped residents paint pumpkins in anyway of their choosing. The residents could paint was much as they could and the volunteers would help and assist when needed. When the pumpkins were done and we set them to dry, we started to bake a fall themed blondie bar. Though this activity was chaotic due to the complicated instructions, the residents still had lots of fun and the end product of the baked good was very delicious. In between activities, we also played rounds of UNO which became very competitive because the residents were very good players and the volunteers couldn’t keep up. Finally we worked with the residents to create Halloween masks and Halloween posters. The residents made wonderful posters that they could hang up for the Halloween season.

After the conclusion of all our activities we took one big group photo. Coming out of this, we learned that no matter what, you can have fun with any one and make every activity inclusive. We learned that it is easy to work with others. We all had fun in a positive and teamwork focused environment.

Members who participated include:

Maxim Li (3 hours), Haoyang Sun (Great Neck Branch, 3 hours), Leo Zheng (1.5 hours), Zihan Wang (3 hours), Leah Chan (3 hours), Michael Zhang (3 hours)
