On October 12, the Syosset AYLUS Organization visited the Long Island Native Plant Initiative, where we sifted seeds collected from the fields. We used a special tool and a grater to extract the seeds. Since the seeds were challenging to remove, we employed various methods, including using our hands and tools to collect them. As our trays filled up, we dumped the seeds into a box where all the sifted seeds were collected. Other AYLUS members were sifting seeds from a smaller box using different-sized sifters, ranging from the largest to the smallest seeds. Additionally, some members helped in the nursery by labeling plants that did not have tags. This made it clearer for Pam, one of the workers at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative, and for customers looking to buy the plants. We were also tasked with transporting plants from the smaller greenhouses outside to the nursery, ensuring they were in good condition for customers. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS Organization was very successful in assisting the Long Island Native Plant Initiative and promoting biodiversity for native plants on Long Island.
