AYLUS Syosset Members Volunteer at the Arboretum Planting Fields 10/5/24

AYLUS Syosset branch went to Planting Fields Arboretum on 10/5/24 to remove English Ivy. English Ivy is an Invasive species there in the park that was introduced about 50 years ago.

With the Great Neck branch, we began to clear out a designated area of English Ivy. We pulled out the roots of the English Ivy out of the ground to ensure that it wouldn’t regrow the next time we go there. Additionally, it was removed off of trees to prevent it from flowering and spreading the seeds by birds and the wind.

Everyone was equipped with gloves to prevent injury to hands when pulling the weeds, there were also tools that were given out, such as shovels, rakes, and pruners to accelerate the process. When the shift was over, we had removed the designated area of English Ivy and about half of the English Ivy from another area in the arboretum.
