On Thursday, October 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered with NOSH Delivers, located at 15 Hill Street, Glen Cove, NY. NOSH Delivers is a nonprofit food pantry organization, founded in March of 2020. This organization helps provide a place for local families that struggle with food insecurities to pick up their own groceries. They also help deliver groceries to homes in need.
At Nosh’s food pantry, we helped guide families to different food options that they could possibly want, as there were a variety of food options. These options included foods like bread, drinks, canned food, snacks, and fresh produce. Furthermore, we helped other volunteers unload foods from piles of boxes to either organize them to be placed on shelves or to store them in freezers and boxes to be used later. Additionally, we were also responsible for packaging NOSH bags with foods to be later delivered to people and homes. When helping people choose what foods they would like to take home or placing foods on the shelves. We made sure we removed any moldy, broken, or expired foods to ensure the foods that people take home are of adequate quality. When the event started to end, we helped clean up the place and organized cardboard boxes and foods in preparation for another event the next day.
Watching families and people with a grateful mood and bags full of groceries leave was a delightful experience. We were honored to help volunteer alongside NOSH to help hand out groceries to families with food insecurities. Volunteering with NOSH also helped motivate us to continue to help people in our community.
