On October 5th, 2024, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm volunteers from Aylus Roslyn Branch worked at Nosh Food Delivery. Nosh is a non-profit organization, which delivers food and drinks weekly to those in need.
When we arrived, we helped restock the shelves with different food and drinks. After that, we all got assigned multiple different tasks such as helping the workers at Nosh make Nosh bags ( a bag full of food and beverages), help direct people and give out food, and help the workers prepare for Monday by laying down the resources they plan on using. Due to the volunteering, we made sure that there was less work for the employees at Nosh and made sure that people were getting the basic necessities they needed.
The work at Nosh was surprisingly difficult. The materials needed to be constantly stocked for the people in need. The boxes containing the food and drinks were surprisingly heavy. Most of the people that Nosh gives food and beverages to don’t understand English, which makes communication very hard. We overcame the language barrier by using general signs that most people understand like pointing and getting help from people who knew the languages. Some skills that would’ve made this job easier is knowing multiple languages and strength. Knowing the same languages as the people who came to Nosh would’ve made the job easier and strength is needed for this job because of the fact that the boxes are heavy and hard to carry. Volunteering at Nosh has taught us the importance of helping others and the difficulties that people go through.
